The Speak Easy is a word game to help FUSAC readers with their French. The reader chooses the French word or expression to match the English equivalent. There was a puzzle published each month in FUSAC magazine for 25 years, currently there are new puzzles online monthly and the puzzles are available in 3 books.
In solving the puzzles we discover that in English we say “don’t count your chickens before they are hatched” but in French the chicken is transformed into a bear. The French expression is “Il ne faut pas vendre la peau de l’ours avant de l’avoir tué” (literally you should not sell the skin of the bear before having killed it). In English we say “Button your lip”, but in French the mouth is sewn shut (bouche cousue). By playing the games we learn idiomatic expressions which allow us to integrate cultural references to our day to day language in a playful way. The Speak Easy Puzzles Books are a collection of more than 100 matching puzzles in organized by themes to make remembering easier. The book is richly illustrated with original watercolors.
